A Welcome Letter from Morningside Toastmasters Club

photoThank you for visiting Morningside Toastmasters Club.

Toastmasters will provide you with an opportunity to learn to communicate more effectively, become a better listener, improve your presentation skills and leadership potential, build your ability to motivate and persuade, reach your professional and personal goals whilst increasing your self-confidence. The aforementioned skills will be achieved in an environment that is supportive, friendly, interactive and inexpensive through time-tested methods, a self-paced curriculum and constructive evaluations.

Your development will begin at your very first Toastmasters meeting so please make yourself comfortable in our club and take the opportunity to speak to any of our members about what Toastmasters has done for them. We also encourage you to visit several clubs before choosing which one to join, as every club has a different ambience and culture. It’s important that you join a club whose culture and spirit you resonate with.  If you do decide to join our club, seek out our Vice President Membership or any of our Committee Members who can guide you on the next step.

As a Toastmaster, my journey has been nothing short of phenomenal, having had the opportunity to  learn  to prepare and give different speeches, including:
  • Technical presentations;
  • Impromptu speeches;
  • Speeches to persuade, motivate, inspire;
  • Special occasion speeches: being an MC, eulogies, wedding speeches, toasts,press releases and speaking to the media; and
  • Giving constructive evaluations and performance appraisals.

Being part of a club with an array of individuals from different backgrounds, professions and walks of life, has provided me with an excellent opportunity to form meaningful relationships and lifelong networks.

Toastmasters has also  improved my leadership skills immensely. During my tenure as President of Morningside, I had the opportunity to plan and execute a strategy for the growth and development of the club, ensuring a conducive environment for our members to learn and grow, and to position the Club to ensure that it had a competitive advantage over other Clubs. The role also gave me the opportunity to lead a committee of professionals from an array of industries and professions- an opportunity I would not have ordinarily had in my chosen career.

Subsequent to my experience as President, I have been appointed to serve on Toastmasters’ Southern Africa District Leadership Team as an Area Director. My role entails giving direction to the formulation and achievement of Toastmasters International’s philosophy, strategy and goals in the Clubs which I oversee.

The growth I have I have seen in myself and fellow toastmasters has been remarkable!

Botse Matlala.
Morningside Immediate Past President and Area Director, Area L5.
